Cross‐Orogen Granite Migration as an Indicator of Slab Rollback Along Eastern Gondwana

Slab rollback during subduction plays a key role in controlling continental growth at convergent plate boundaries. The dynamics of currently subducting slabs can be precisely constrained using geophysical techniques. In contrast, ancient episodes slab difficult to constrain, yet are critical unlocking the tectonic evolution long-lived orogens such as Phanerozoic Australian Tasmanides eastern Gondwana. Recognition relies on identification progressive migration magmatic arcs. Here, we investigate timing and isotopic variation ∼90 km trans-orogen Carboniferous Bathurst Batholith potential indicator rollback. U–Pb–Hf isotopes, combined with regional zircon Hf isotope data set, suggest that eastward batholith over ∼18 Myr, from 340.1 322.4 Ma, records maximum steepening rate ∼0.6–1.2° Myr−1 relatively stable trench setting. These results provide record establish missing link between Lachlan New England Gondwanan Tasmanides.
